Now in their second year, the THE Asia Awards celebrate transformational work of universities across the continent. With ten categories – such as 'Outstanding Support for Students', 'International Strategy of the Year' and 'Leadership and Management Team of the Year' – these prestigious awards celebrate the behind-the-scenes work of universities. From hundreds of entries, the shortlisted institutions are announced today, with a virtual awards ceremony to follow in October.

The importance of competency-based learning for students during changing times

Designed to enable students to learn the skills and knowledge needed for a particular job, competency-based is becoming an important part of higher education. Many universities globally are now promoting the teaching of future job skills as an essential theme for students, not least because they can be learned through multiple models of learning, such as "online, on the job, on campus and onsite".

In this session, Coursera will present use cases based upon its own data and discuss how blended learning models can help students cultivate job-relevant skills that lead to better career outcomes.

Building resilience via collaboration during, and after, Covid-19

Disasters, whether global pandemics, earthquakes or extreme weather, can have a dramatic effect on universities' ability to conduct their missions of education, research and knowledge transfer. Focusing on the research aspects, from sharing data to best practices on mitigation and recovery, universities have a key role to play. Crises also provide learnings to help create greater resiliency for the future - whether within a single institution, across an entire region, or globally. As many Asian universities begin reopening in the wake of Covid-19, what lessons are being uncovered through regional and global research collaboration?

The session will begin with a keynote from YS Chi, chairman - Elsevier, chaired by Joyce Lau, Asia editor - THE.

This will be followed by a panel discussion between Hideo Ohno, president - Tohoku University, Fanny Cheung, prov-vice-chancellor - Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Huey-Jen Jenny Su, president - National Cheng Kung University, chaired by Anders Karlsson, vice president of global strategic networks - Elsevier.
